One kind of fear of looking foolish hits almost everyone on the planet – even if they’ve done absolutely nothing to suggest they’ll look foolish, even if the project is completely on track.
What hits us is ‘performance anxiety’.
We walk up to the podium to give our talk and are suddenly overcome with fear.Adrenaline courses through us, giving us that fight or flight reaction. Our survival is not in question when we’re giving a talk (usually!) but our sense of self certainly is.
It’s a fine line between success and failure: sportsmen and women who learn to channel this adrenaline rush and find flow to produce their peak performance just when it matters most are destined for glory, whilst those whose nerves overcome them are destined to lose.
Try this:
Step back mentally and give yourself an honest appraisal of your current performance. Where are you performing brilliantly, and where are you struggling?
