Try this. Pluck up a bit of courage and look for a group of three people. (But if you see a threesome standing really close and all three of them looking a bit intense, best to pass them by. They might be in the middle of some kind of deep and meaningful exchange.) Go up to them and say something like May I join you? Am I interrupting? As there’s three of them, the chances are that you can strike up conversation with one of them.
